14.5 Insider Threats

An insider is any person who works within an organization and has access to important or sensitive resources. An insider attack occurs when such a person abuses their access rights to deliberately violate rules or endanger the organization in any way. These types of attacks are often carried out by employees who either have access rights to (monetarily) valuable information, are dissatisfied with their employment, have been dismissed, or are inadequately trained. Insider attacks can therefore also happen unconsciously. In principle, all employees are at risk, although some individuals are more prone to mistakes and therefore particularly vulnerable to such attacks.
