A Final Thing
As we’re almost about to go our separate ways,1 I guess it’s time I levelled with you: I wasn’t entirely honest when we set out on our journey together.
Yes, I want you to do well at work. I want you to come up with brilliant ideas and build radical things. I want you to create beautiful experiences for your clients and enjoy meaningful relationships with your colleagues. And I absolutely want you to find more success and fulfilment in your career and life, and become an Everyday Creative.
But I want something else.
I want you to recognise that unleashing your creative potential is bigger than your career. It’s bigger than selling a few thousand books, or lifting your engagement scores a few decimal points. It’s bigger than you.
The world needs your creativity. Now more than ever. We need all hands on deck to tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time. We need you to find and follow your joy, curiosity and passion so that you begin (or continue) to dream, design and deliver things that matter. Things that make our world better.
Sure, we need large scale reform, we need big corporations to change their practices, we need a global shift in mindset and behaviour. But we also need more fully engaged, courageous, open-hearted people who are willing to speak out and stand for more meaningful workplaces.
And it starts by reclaiming your identity. By reimagining the possibility of your work and redefining your unique value.
