The Services

The aim of this chapter is to describe some of the typical services which can be run on top of Evolved UMTS networks. Most of these services are not specific to EPS networks. Therefore, this chapter focuses on how the services would be supported over EPS, in trying to emphasis what are the added value and specific aspects of service deployment over such packet-based new networks.

In this chapter, the following services are described:

  • Push-to-talk Over Cellular (PoC) – which can be seen either as an enhancement of text-based Instant Messaging or an alternative to the traditional voice service.
  • Presence – which is sometimes considered as a companion service to PoC or Instant Messaging.
  • Multimedia broadcast and multicast.
  • Multimedia telephony – which includes Voice over IP as well as video telephony.
