About 1100 years ago in what is now northern France, the Viking leader known as Rollo to the Franks (“Rolf” to the Vikings) improved upon a century-old Viking tradition by not only raiding, but occupying Rouen and surrounding territory. The century-old Frankish tradition of persuading Viking leaders to leave by paying large amounts of gold and silver had resulted in a reduced treasury. Hence, the king of the Franks, known as Charles the Simple,1 determined upon another strategy. The king agreed to acknowledge Rollo’s right to a large territory in return for assisting the king to defend against other Vikings.
