I have worked in South Africa at various points in my career. My first exposure, many years ago, was collaborating with microfinance institutions and policymakers focused on financial inclusion. More recently, I did a nationwide survey of the country’s sharing economy to better understand who was participating and how the concept was viewed in the Rainbow Nation.
As I traveled—when I got into taxis, went into shops, and observed locals—I would often hear “Sawubona.” Sawubona is a standard Zulu greeting. Zulu is the largest ethnic group in the country, and sawubona is how you say hello.
