extensive. The earliest publications related
to mutation appeared in 1978. Since then
research publications and tools have
continued to appear quite regularly. A
summary of mutation research is as
follows:
Early work: The idea of program mutation
was proposed in 1971 by Richard Lipton
while a graduate student at Carnegie
Mellon University. Lipton’s paper was
titled Fault Diagnosis of Computer
Programs. Early master’s and doctoral
dissertations under the advisement of
DeMillo and Lipton were completed. St.
Andrè wrote a master’s thesis [22]. Acree
