Welcome to the world of knowledge! In this chapter, we discuss metadata repositories that contain what computer science calls unstructured data—which is simply text, pictures, sound, and film. Additionally, this chapter will explore metadata repositories that catalog various—physical—objects.

In this chapter, we step away from the immediate IT landscape. However, as you will discover in later chapters, the metadata contained within the repositories we discuss here holds significant value when taking more holistic, strategic views of the IT landscape.
