This chapter presents the third wave of data decentralization: a decentralization of metadata. While I’ve aimed to explain the technical details in straightforward language, the concept of the meta grid is new and different, so I encourage you to keep an open mind. In this chapter, we dive into the four main points of the “Meta Grid Manifesto,” followed by a closer look at what the meta grid is and what it isn’t. We’ll also explore how to document the meta grid using simple architectural decision records (ADRs), models, and lists. Finally, we will walk through a series of examples of meta grid architectures.

The Meta Grid Manifesto

In this manifesto, originally published on my website, I introduced the concept of the meta grid in depth for the first time. The manifesto makes the case for a third wave of data decentralization, summarized in four key points:
