Guide to CFO Success: Leadership Strategies for Corporate Financial Professionals
by Samuel Dergel
PART TWO
Successful Employment Strategies for the CFO
IN PART ONE, I INFORMED you that CFO success requires a focus on your career and a focus on your current employment. Part One identified strategies for career success in each chapter.
You will notice that this book does not address technical proficiency as a key component of CFO success. As mentioned in Chapter 1, Bill Koefoed told us that strong skills in finance are necessary to do the job, but they do not differentiate you from others.
Your technical finance skills are an important part of what makes you a CFO. You need to have and use these skills as Chief Financial Officer. There are books, courses, conferences, and online resources that can help you improve your technical finance skills. Most of the training and development directed at CFOs is technical. There are some excellent resources available if you need to improve your mechanical abilities.
Part Two will focus on strategies to use with your current employer that will make you the best CFO you can be. These strategies include planning for success at your employer, managing your key CFO relationships, and building and developing the best finance team possible to support your CFO success.
You can be technically competent as a CFO, but if you don't have a plan, do not manage your relationships, and do not have the best possible team to support you, you are not destined to be a successful CFO for your employer.
