Deep learning—why now?

Most of the core concepts in the field of DL were already in place by the 80s and 90s, and therefore, the question arises why suddenly we see an increase in the applications of DL to solve different problems from image classification and image inpainting, to self-driving cars and speech generation. The major reason is twofold, outlined as follows:

• Availability of large high-quality dataset: The internet resulted in the generation of an enormous amount of datasets in terms of images, video, text, and audio.
