It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Prefetching and preloading resources
Some of the lesser-known properties of the <link> tag are the rel=prefetch and rel=preload options. They allow the browser to preload some of the content that will be required in the subsequent or, sometimes, even the current page.
