5Modeling of Voltage Source Converters
“While the appearances may vary, the essence remains unchanged”

As mentioned in Chapter 2 and reported in [31], VSCs have the highest market share and are widely used in industries. This chapter is to derive the state space equations of various types of VSCs. The state space equations will be used in later chapters for harmonic model derivations.
5.1 Single‐Phase Two‐Level VSCs
The schematic circuit of a single‐phase VSC is depicted in Fig. 5.1. Assuming the diodes remain appropriately biased, an equivalent simplified circuit may be analyzed which contains only four fully controlled bi‐directional switches.
5.1.1 Switching Functions
In order to specify the states of the bi‐directional switches, it is convenient to associate a switching function with each switch,
. Therefore, a switching function
corresponding to
, is defined to be 1 when
is closed, and 0 when it is open. Thus, four switching functions exist for a single‐phase VSC. To ensure the VSC terminal voltage, , is always uniquely defined as a function ...
