11Loop‐Breaking 3 Method
“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”
Henry Ford
This chapter is devoted to the elaboration of the loop‐breaking 3 (LB 3) method where the loop breaking is occurred within and between components. As mentioned in Chapter, the LB 3 method is suitable for systems involving a multi‐converter system. Hence, we will show how the LB 3 method can be applied to solve for a power system containing multiple VSCs. The power system itself will be modeled in OpenDSS, which is a comprehensive electrical simulator, developed by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) for studies of distribution systems. OpenDSS allows one to interface with a variety of existing software such as MATLAB and Python. Thus, OpenDSS serves as an ideal platform for the LB 3 method. Section 11.1 will briefly describe OpenDSS. Section 11.2 shows how the MATLAB program can be interfaced with OpenDSS. Section 11.3 illustrates various examples on how developed VSC models can be interfaced with OpenDSS.
11.1 OpenDSS
OpenDSS is referred to as the open source Distribution System Simulator. The principal author of the software is Roger Dugan, who has been engaged in the development since 1997. The initial purpose for the development of the software was to serve the following objectives [120]:
- support distribution analysis applications
- provide a very flexible research platform
- fill gaps left by other distribution system analysis tools
- study ...
