Before leaving the Air Force, I considered a military career, but decided against it in favor of business. When I was winding up my military stint, someone asked me what I wanted to do, and I explained that I planned to return to J.P. Morgan. The interviewer asked where I thought I would end up, and I modestly replied, “Probably as chairman of the board.”
