Ruby on Rails Terminology
You’ll primarily work with the Object Relational Mapping (ORM) layer in Ruby on Rails called Active Record.[46]
While having features in common with other ORM systems, Active Record goes beyond basic persistence. Migrations provide a schema evolution mechanism. Active Record provides programmers with expressive data modeling and validation capabilities.
Active Record associations, like has_many and belongs_to, appear like documentation but are callable Ruby methods.
Active Record validations document and enforce correctness and consistency at the application layer. They can hook into lifecycle events that are triggered when models are created, saved, updated, or deleted.
