Sharding at the Application Level
Sharding is an overloaded and confusing term and isn’t a capability that’s natively supported in PostgreSQL. Generally, the term means to expand your database beyond a single instance, which can be achieved in several ways.
The term can be confused with table partitioning, which is something different in PostgreSQL that you’ll look at in the next chapter. Let’s look at the “Shard (database architecture)” definition from Wikipedia.[354]
