6 the automatic insect trapper

Entomology (the scientific study of insects) is a vital field of research. An amateur scientist like yourself can contribute to this field by studying the insects in your area. In this chapter, you’ll build an automated trap that will capture nocturnal insects but not kill them.

The Automatic Insect Trapper attracts insects to a box by using ultraviolet (UV) light, an established technique used by professional entomologists. Usually, though, entomologists funnel the insects into a container that kills them. Instead, you’ll design the Automatic Insect Trapper to automatically close the lid on the box after the insects have been baited with the UV light.
