People often interpret the term radiation as referring solely to the harmful radioactive emissions from nuclear reactors or atomic bombs. But all objects emit radiation in the form of heat. Radiation, in general scientific terms, refers to any energy coming from an object. For example, you can feel infrared radiation from the sun when you’re outdoors.
Sensors called radiometers can measure infrared radiation and even quantify the surface temperature of an object. Satellites use radiometers to measure temperatures related to the earth’s clouds, layers of atmosphere, and oceans.
