Getting Serious about Corporate Political Responsibility

In October 2022, the former CEO of Unilever, Paul Polman, wrote that business should “step in” to back legislation aimed at abolishing the death penalty in Ohio. He suggested companies “have a clear interest in supporting criminal justice systems that heal our societies, rather than divide and destabilize them,” adding that the death penalty is “fiscally irresponsible.” Polman justified his advice on the grounds of our rising expectations for CEOs: “Society increasingly expects its corporate leaders to take a stand on big, touchstone issues that speak to their company’s values, and to promote basic standards of dignity and justice.”1
