The best charts are well written

Words are an essential component of data graphics. As a minimum, we need them to describe and quantify the data we plot. Without this text, charts are little more than abstract geometry.

However, it’s probably fair to say that not many people consider writing skills to be at the top of the list when it comes to the attributes needed to be a top chart maker. Academic research suggests that this may be flawed thinking.
