Chapter 3: Interaction elements
Abstract
This chapter presents the basic elements of human interaction with computing technology. Elements presented include methods for point-selection operations and text entry, single-switch scanning, gesture input, brain-computer interfaces, spatial relationships between controls and displays, latency, order of control, degrees of freedom, modes, and the use of metaphor in human-computer interfaces. The discussions emphasize desktop or laptop systems, but also examine virtual reality and the mobile context, with a look at touch-based interaction, multi-touch, and tilt-based input control. A concluding section examines interaction errors and their impact on the user experience.
