Chapter 7: Modelling interaction
Abstract
This chapter examines models of HCI from the perspective of descriptive models and predictive models. A case for building and using models of interaction is made and demonstrated through examples. Descriptive models presented included a quadrant model of groupware, a key-action model for keyboards, a three-state model for graphical interfaces, and a bimanual model for two-handed interaction. Predictive models presented include the keystroke-level model, Fitts' law, the Hick-Hyman law, and a model for skill acquisition. Building linear, power, and logarithmic prediction equations using least-squares regression is studied using hypothetical examples and examples from the HCI literature.
