When the George Washington Bridge (GWB) was completed in 1931, it consisted of only one level. This bridge handled the traffic at that time more than sufficiently, and it was a beautiful piece of construction. History shows, however, that the builders could not have anticipated how much more traffic this bridge would need to carry. Today when you approach the GWB, you must decide between taking the upper or the lower level. With the bridge slowly reaching its capacity, the builders added a new level just below the existing one, to meet the growing traffic needs.
