In the Rational Unified Process, analysis and design are combined into one discipline even though they are two separate techniques. The investigation and research of subjects (analysis) leads to new findings and better understanding of the domain, and it provides reasons and arguments to support an IT system as a solution to a problem (design). The boundaries are often not precisely drawn, and it is not uncommon for one person to fill the roles of both System Analyst and Designer.
