Staffing the Social Mission

Liz Bankowski was the first woman on the board of Ben & Jerry’s, which was a big deal for a company that prided itself on having progressive values. But her value to the company went far beyond symbolism. She was just what Ben & Jerry’s needed to take the social mission to the next level. She was a political professional who knew how to generate support for social initiatives, rearrange employee resources to push them forward, get them done in a focused way, and evaluate the results so that the company would do a better job next time.
