The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a pillar of data management. Its use has skyrocketed in recent years. An enormous amount of information is stored in XML. Rather than being arranged into tables and columns, in XML data are contained on collections of hierarchical documents that can be stored in file systems or databases.
