The Internet Protocol (IP) Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) was originally defined in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 6 specifications as overlay architecture on top of the 3GPP Packed Switched Core Networks. Its original purpose was to provide real-time multimedia services for wireless networks. Thanks to its widely abstract architecture definition, IMS specifications have been endorsed by other standardization bodies, contributing to the creation of a uniform environment for the development of communication and Internet services.
