Named Data Networking Project

Named content networking was first proposed in Jacobson, Smetters, and Thornton (2009), subsequently attracting several related contributors working on projects that were eventually integrated into a more general effort known as the Named Data Networking (NDN) project (Zhang et al. 2010).

The NDN architecture exploits the advantage of a universal central layer with a simple communication interface and is illustrated by an hourglass model (Figure 13.1) intentionally similar to the one proposed for the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP) stack (Deering 2001).
