Splunk gathers metrics from different sources and stores this data in a new type of index that is enhanced for efficient assimilation and retrieval of metrics data. This index can be used only for metrics data. Splunk offers (or supports) two popular methods for gathering metrics data: collectId and StatsD.
Generally, the idea is to install and configure one of the preceding tools that listens for metric data, aggregates it, and releases the data every few seconds to where Splunk has a metric index created.
