7Introduction
The primary measure of performance in TPM is overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). A powerful component of the TPM process, OEE clearly indicates implementation progress and equipment performance. OEE measures the effective utilization of capital assets by expressing the impact of equipment related losses. Seven types of equipment loss are tracked:
• downtime due to machine breakdown
• time required for setup and adjustments
• time or cycles lost to inefficient startup
• time or cycles lost to tooling
• time or cycles lost to minor stoppages
• operating at less than ideal speed
• producing defective or off-spec product that is rejected, requires rework or repair, or is sold at a lower price
