10Introduction

North American successes in TPM have been limited, but are on the rise. No plant has yet achieved the JIPM PM Prize, although several companies are considering pursuing the award. Although TPM is more than 20 years old in Japan, it has been practiced in North America for less than 10 years.

Despite its relative youth in North America, many companies are adopting its concepts fully and are implementing it vigorously in their plants and facilities. Other companies are encountering TPM while benchmarking against their Japanese competitors. Many of those organizations are experimenting with the concept in a number of locations. Japanese operations transplanted to North America also are implementing it here.
