Toxigenic Microbes
Toxigenic microbes are those that produce mycotoxins and endotoxins, the toxins associated with fungi and bacteria, respectively. Although toxigenic microbes have often been overlooked, environmental professionals are becoming more aware of their potential impact on indoor air quality.
Farmer's fever, also called organic dust toxic syndrome (ODTS), is caused by breathing in dust from spoiled plant materials. It is a common respiratory illness in farmers, particularly those working with grain, hay, silage, and confined animals. Beyond agriculture environments, indoor environments are suspect of exposures similar to that of ODTS.
