Typically, Ethernet over Multiprotocol Label Switching (EoMPLS) and Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) technologies have required an MPLS switching core for Layer 2 extension over long distances. When the core network is not dedicated for Layer 2 virtual private network (L2VPN) extension, migrating an existing IP core to MPLS can be complex. Also, MPLS and its related technologies require expertise for deployment and maintenance.
