Typically, Ethernet over Multiprotocol Label Switching (EoMPLS) and Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) technologies have required an MPLS switching core for Layer 2 extension over long distances. When the core network is not dedicated for Layer 2 virtual private network (L2VPN) extension, migrating an existing IP core to MPLS can be complex. Also, MPLS and its related technologies require expertise for deployment and maintenance. To ease the adoption of Layer 2 extension, Cisco offers solutions to encapsulate EoMPLS or VPLS traffic over generic routing encapsulation (GRE) tunnels.
