Yeah, yeah, I know. I couldn't even go a few chapters without including a photo of my All Blacks hero, Richie McCaw.

Call it a man‐crush, but this guy is a legend. Humility in spades, values through the roof and a ‘lead by example’ work ethic that is yet to be matched. Impressive.

He, along with countless other sporting greats, have an inherent belief that the result will be the result. No point thinking too much about it, as it's how you get there that matters.

Results and awards working in perfect balance. With two consecutive Rugby World Cups and an 89 per cent All Blacks captain success ratio, there might just be something in this.

THE MESSAGE

I believe there is a distinction between results and awards.

Results are numbers on a page, figures on an income statement and positions on a quantifiably measured graph. They are factually cold, hard and indisputable. As they are undeniably important, every good leader will chase them with rigour and ruthless determination.

Results create satisfaction, contentment and a sense of individual and team achievement. Like you, if you're reading this book, I value results greatly. They have driven me throughout my entire career.

Awards, on the other hand, are a level up.
