In this chapter, we discuss mixed models in the context of several popular debates within the statistical and data science communities. It should provide you with some deeper insights regarding their relationship to various perspectives and how you can navigate and distinguish them.
In this book we largely follow statistical pragmatism —the "big picture of statistical inference" approach advocated by Kass (2011). The following diagram (Figure 1 from that article) illustrates the main components and their interrelations.
