SHORTLY AFTER I BECAME dean of the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Law School, a senior member of the faculty congratulated me on the appointment, saying ‘‘I’m glad you’re dean, because I trust you.’’ At first I was flattered by his confidence in me, but then I began to think: ‘‘Wait a minute!
