Probably the first consideration to be made when choosing a projection is the purpose of the map. Do you plan to use it for navigation? Do you plan to compare quantitative data represented as areas or lines? Is preserving shapes, angles and patterns important? What about direction and distance?
To choose a projection, it is useful to classify them according to the spatial properties that they preserve. A projection will always distort the projected subject in one way or another, but some properties may be preserved when distortion increases for others.
