Thematic maps are among the most popular data visualizations. Unlike reference maps, which usually focus on political and natural features, thematic maps focus on a particular theme, such as population density and distribution, amount of rainfall, migration flows, etc.
A thematic map doesn't always need any country outlines. The map shown in the following screenshot is a dot distribution displaying towns and cities with at least 1000 inhabitants. The only data used was a CSV file with latitudes, longitudes and populations. The dots were positioned using a conic projection scale.
