In Chapter 4, Exploring Query Execution Plans, we introduced columnstore indexes. Columnstore indexes are different than rowstore indexes (clustered and non-clustered) in that all the data from a single column is stored together in a highly compressed format, rather than the entire row being stored together. This type of data storage is useful for data warehouse type queries—queries that need to search, aggregate, and return large amounts of data.
