A pull server can be set up to use HTTPS or SMB with NTFS permissions for the MOF and DSC resource repositories. This controls access to the DSC configuration files and DSC resources and also encrypts them over the wire.
At some point, you will most likely have to provide credentials for one of your settings or DSC resources. Certificates can be used to encrypt the credentials being used in the DSC configurations. It would be foolish to enter the credentials inside the DSC configuration files, as they would be in plain text that anyone could read. By setting up and using certificates to encrypt the credentials, only the servers with the correct certificates can read the credentials.
