In Chapter 20, we covered Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), the underlying e-mail transport mechanism or protocol by which e-mail is sent from e-mail clients to the server and from one mail server to another mail server. We also mentioned how mail delivery agents (MDAs) facilitate the processing of incoming mail (such as sorting or filtering mail according to sender, subject line, length of message, keywords, and so on).
