E-UTRAN and EPC Protocol Structure

This chapter presents an overview of the LTE/LTE-Advanced protocol structure with the intent to describe where important functions reside in the E-UTRAN and EPC nodes, protocol layer terminations at various access and core network nodes, as well as the functional split between the E-UTRAN and the EPC. The E-UTRAN radio protocols can be separated into control-plane and user-plane entities, where the user-plane protocols are typically responsible for carrying user data and control-plane protocols are used to transfer signaling and control information.
