When working with variables, it’s often important to get a sense of the center of their distributions. There are multiple statistics we can use to summarize the center of a distribution; they give different information and are appropriate in different situations. Statistics that provide such information are referred to as measures of central tendency, and the three most common are the arithmetic mean, the median, and the mode.
