or many years, I was in denial about my
soldering. I knew how it should be done,
and even wrote about it in my electronics books;
but I didn’t enjoy doing it, and my impatient
attitude created results that were — well, a bit

I told myself that it didn’t matter. So long as my
solder joints conducted electricity and didn’t fall
apart, why should I care if they were large and
lumpy?
Secretly, of course, I did care, and my denial
was always a fragile facade. It was finally
demolished when I took on a project requiring
a lot of very precise soldering, and I couldn’t
pretend anymore. I had to get serious.
