10.1 AWKの背後にある歴史
awkコマンドは、UNIXでもLinuxでも欠くことのできないコマンドスイートです。UNIXのawkコマンドは、1970年代にベル研究所で開発され、主要な開発者であるAlfred Aho、Peter Weinberger、Brian Kernighanの名字にちなんで名付けられました。awkコマンドは、AWKというプログラミング言語を利用できるようにしたものです。この言語は、テキストストリーム内のデータを処理することを目的としています。
AWKには数多くの実装があります。
- gawk
- GNU AWKとも呼ばれます。これはAWKの無料バージョンであり、多くの開発者によって使われています。本書でもこれを使います。
- mawk
- Mike Brennanという人物によって作られた別の実装です。この実装は、gawkのいくつかの機能だけを含んでいます。実行速度の向上を目的としています。
- tawk
- Thompson AWKとも呼ばれる実装で、Solaris、DOS、Windowsで動作します。
