13章AWKを使ったlastlogの改良
「12章 AWKを使ったログの集約」では、テキストファイルから取得した大量のデータを基に複雑なレポートを作成する方法を学びました。同じようにして、lastlogなどの標準的なコマンドラインツールからの出力結果を使って、さまざまなレポートを作成することができます。lastlogは、本来、すべてのユーザーについて最後のログイン時刻をレポートするためのツールですが、lastlogからの出力結果をフィルタリングしたい場合もよくあります。たとえば、システムにログインするために一度も使われたことのないユーザーアカウントを除外したい場合などです。また、rootについてのレポートは不要な場合もあります。そのアカウントは主にsudoのためだけに使われ、標準的なログインとして定期的に使われるものではないからです。
この章では、lastlogとXMLデータの処理について学びます。この章は、AWKについて調査する最後の章であり、レコードセパレーター（RS）の設定についても解説します。AWKのフィールドセパレーター（FS）の使い方についてはすでに学びましたが、レコードセパレーターをデフォルトの改行から、自分たちのニーズに合うものに変えることができます（AWKが提供する組み込み変数の基本は「10.3 AWKの変数」で説明しました）。
