CHAPTER 8
Beams and Bending-Stresses
8.1 Simple Bending Theory
In Sections 7.2 and 7.3 it was shown that the beam under bending will be subjected to stresses on its transverse cross-section. These stresses on transverse cross-section produces the moment of resistance and shear force of resistance as will be required for the equilibrium of any free body of the beam, such as shown in Fig. 7.3 (b) and (d). The S.F. and B.M. at any section will be equal in magnitude to respectively shear force and bending moment of resistance but opposite in sign. It is customary to calculate the B.M. and S.F. at a section by the method of previous chapter and regard them to be equal to the moment of resistance and shear resistance force respectively.
