Preface to the First Edition
This book is designed to fulfill the needs of two courses in Mechanics of Solids or Strength of Materials. Such courses are often offered at second- and third-year levels of an engineering degree programme. It is understood that the students study the first course after having completed a course in Engineering Mechanics.
The text begins with the introduction of concepts of stress assuming that force and equilibrium have been understood. After introducing strain and material constants, the students become ready to analyse effects of forces on deformable bodies of various shapes and geometrical forms. In all cases the need for keeping a body in a reference frame (like x- and y-axes) is emphasized.
