Gas-Sensing Materials and Devices
More than 50 years ago, Brattain and Bardeen [12] discovered that gas
adsorption onto a semiconductor produces a change in the electrical con-
ductance of the material. From that time onward, a detailed study on semi-
conducting materials was carefully done with a variety of gaseous species
that brought about electrical changes. A great amount of research was car-
ried out in order to realize commercial semiconducting devices based on this
principle. The rst proposal for this type of devices came in 1962 by Seiyama
