It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 released the dependency of installing a Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) client to send email from an instance of SQL Server. Now email can be sent using a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) email server, such as a Microsoft Exchange Server. Not only are you relieved from the MAPI client, but also SQL Server will continue to queue messages even if there is a problem with the SMTP server. When the problem is resolved, SQL Server will start to send messages.
